Mr Comey was formally accused soon after the former president pressured his attorney general to take action against him.
Court Developments
At the proceedings on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to present various motions to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to assume control of the proceedings.
The former director's legal matter was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the court.

The former director was the head of the FBI from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, the director sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the national vote that he was probing Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against the candidate were never brought, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
Prosecutors assert the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not authorized someone at the FBI to release to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, hinder and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Public Statements
Via social media Mr Comey posted to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"We have known for considerable time that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
These allegations against James Comey emerged after Donald Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and others.
