Apple Watch 11th Series Review: Excellent Gesture Control and Extended Battery Performance

This newest wearable Series 11 delivers the one thing many users really need in a wearable device: extended battery performance.

In other aspects, the updated device functions as a direct replacement from the previous model, matching it in styling, proportions and capabilities, with most of its upgrades originating from software.

The latest version is also £30 cheaper in the UK, available from 369 pounds (€449/$399/A$679), placed higher than the fresh redesigned Watch SE at £219 for entry-level buyers and the premium Ultra 3 at £749 in the premium segment.

Appearance and Screen

Like last year's Series 10, this updated version comes in at under 10mm slim, resulting in a trim appearance to the wrist, convenient to tuck beneath shirt sleeves and more comfortable during sleep.

This 2,000-nit display remains sufficiently luminous for reading indoors and out, remaining clear at various perspectives, making glancing down to check time or notifications simple.

Protecting the display by glass that is significantly more durable than earlier versions, though not quite as tough of sapphire crystal, that remains exclusive with the higher-end titanium models.

Power and Endurance

The new watch incorporates identical S10 processor found in earlier versions while adding support for optional 5G and stronger reception when you're away from civilization.

Power cells demonstrate growth in size by 9% and 11% in the 42 millimeter and 46 millimeter models in that order.

The 46mm lasted a good two full days during evaluation featuring overnight analysis when not used for fitness.

Typical wearers will just about record two days and two nights until recharge becomes necessary, which takes 66 minutes with a 20-watt or higher charger (sold separately), reaching approximately three-quarters charge in 30 minutes.

Should you participate in workouts, battery endurance reaches approximately eight hours while recording, which is long enough for endurance events or multiple events.

The standout addition is the wrist-flick gesture, requiring swift turning your hand backward and then back to close applications and go back to the home screen.

This functions without raising your wrist to look at the watch, allowing users to stop notifications with a satisfying flick of the wrist.

Wellness Monitoring

The Apple Watch features a complete health monitoring suite of features available in prior generations while introducing a couple of new features along with updated workout app.

Blood pressure notifications check for symptoms of elevated BP during monthly analysis, alerting users to seek medical advice when pulse information suggests you may have underlying conditions.

The new sleep score metric makes Apple's sleep tracking simpler to understand, comparable to rivals from multiple companies.

Each morning the device displays a score out of 100 separated into components into three categories: sleep length, timing and disturbances, all being self-explanatory and available through the wellness application on your smartphone as well.

Workout buddy is an AI coach utilizing your past activity records to provide encouragement before and after workouts, such as recognising existing workout history three times this week and exertion levels you demonstrated.

Also featuring verbal notifications upon achieving certain milestones throughout activities, like specific speed, pulse rate, distance, time or additional measurements.

Options include from three speaking tones, providing audio feedback through connected audio paired with the device for one of 12 activities, like strolling, sprinting or cycling.

However, it only works when you bring along recent smartphones with you, creating frustration sufficient to avoid the feature preventing inconvenience bringing phones during exercise.
